Cleveland and much of northern Ohio is expected to experience severe thunderstorms by 3 p.m. Wednesday, which is also creating a risk for tornadoes throughout the region, according to the National Weather Service.
The weather service issued a hazardous weather warning early Wednesday regarding the storm, which is expected to impact all of Greater Cleveland. In addition to the thunderstorm and risk of tornados, large hail is possible, as seen in previous days as the storm crossed Chicago and parts of Iowa.The winds may also offer conditions for tornadoes in northern Ohio, although parts of Northwest Ohio such as Toledo and Findlay are at higher risk than Greater Cleveland.
Tornadoes are only classified by a rotating column of air in a localized area and are typically wrapped up in rain, with the lowest grade tornado having 3-second gusts of 65 mph to 85 mph. Wednesday, 3-second gusts of up to 100 mph are possible. If a tornado does happen, or if the thunderstorm gets too severe, the weather service recommends seeking shelter in the lowest room in a building, often a basement. Find an isolated room without windows, like a bathroom, if one is unavailable.
