Lunar eclipses occur when the sun, Earth and moon all line up, and the shadow of the Earth falls across the moon. The eclipse will start just after sunset, but peak viewing begins at about 9.16pm AEDT when the moon will be fully covered by the Earth’s shadow; and it should last until 10.41pm. Unlike a solar eclipse, it’s perfectly safe to gaze directly at it.
The moon will be low on the eastern horizon when the eclipse happens, so a spot on the beach along the western side of Port Phillip Bay – where there’s nothing to get in the way – will offer the best viewing, says the former president of the Astronomical Society of Victoria, Perry Vlahos. “However, any location with a clear view to the east without trees, buildings or hills will do,” says Vlahos. “It will not need anything more than naked eye, although binoculars and telescopes will enhance the view.”won’t be until 2025Credit:“For the moment at least, the weather is looking really good,” says Dr Tanya Hill, senior curator of astronomy at Museums Victoria’s Research Institute. “I’m scared to say that actually, especially with how it’s been recently.
“For me, it’s just a reminder that we live on a planet that’s in space. It’s our shadow that’s fallen on the moon and our light that has scattered through the atmosphere that has turned the moon red.“Our planet can affect other things. It’s kind of that generic thing I love about astronomy; it brings a lot of wonder and awe that we’re connected to something so much grander.
How red the moon will get depends on local atmospheric conditions: if there’s enough pollution, volcanic dust or cloud cover, the moon can appear quite red.
