Screen Rant spoke with director Jeff Malmberg and UVA art historian Carmenita Higginbotham about the legacy of Mickey Mouse, showcased in the new disneyplus documentary MickeyTheStoryofaMouse:

As evident by the many regular, everyday people who are interviewed in a portion of a new Mickey Mouse documentary, Disney's iconic mouse still means so much to so many fans even after debuting nearly 100 years ago in the 1920s.

Screen Rant: The documentary was juxtaposed against the creation of the new Mickey short ["Mickey in a Minute"], where Mickey is walking through the museum. Did the idea of this documentary come about because of this new short, or did it just come out that way? Jeff Malmberg: The '90s one? [Laughs]. I wasn't throwing any elbows. There is only so much you can fit in. One of my favorite shorts is "Runaway Brain." I think it's so smart. Have you seen this one, Carmenita?Jeff Malmberg: Yah, so I mean, where Mickey is in "Runaway Brain," he's not allowed to be an adventurer anymore. It's like, how did that one not make it into the film? It's just the function of that linear, 90-minute, tyrannical narrative.

Carmenita Higginbotham: Well, you know the ways in which Mickey is normalized and naturalized into middle-brow, middle-class, American culture is sort of one of the more fascinating transformations of a popular character that was both a brand, but that had its own identity. And when that flattening in the '50 and '60s happened, and he kind of disappeared for a while, I think something was lost in that moment.
