The New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers began a three-game series on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.
With the score tied 1-1, Stanton came to the plate with a runner on first base and two down. He took an inside pitch from Tigers reliever Jose Cisnero for ball one, then a called strike that evened the game.
After crossing home plate, Stanton was greeted in front of the Yankees dugout by Aaron Judge for an arms-up, double hand slap. Anthony Volpe then called time at the plate so that fans could give Stanton a curtain call.Up 3-1 after Stanton’s homer, the Yankees held on to win the opener of a six-game homestand. Their fourth win in a row and seven in eight games has their record back to .500 since Aug. 14. They’re now 69-69 with 24 to play.
The rookie’s hit led to two insurance runs when Gleyber Torres followed with a two-run double that made it a 5-1 game.-- AL Cy Young frontrunner Gerrit Cole strengthened his case holding the Tigers to one run on eight hits over six innings with seven strikeouts and no walks. He was the winning pitcher, improving his record to 13-4 with a 2.90 ERA.
