A severe storm warning has been issued for eastern Australia as a cold front brings the threat of giant hail, damaging winds, and flash flooding. The Bureau of Meteorology predicts widespread storms across NSW, Queensland, the ACT, and potentially Victoria.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe storm warning as a cold front moves across the east coast over the next few days, with predictions of 'giant' hail impacting parts of New South Wales (NSW). The east coast, including some inland areas of Queensland, is preparing for more severe weather . Senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury warned, 'Any severe storms could lead to flash flooding , damaging wind gusts, and large hail.
We may even see locally giant-sized hail across parts of the Central Tablelands of NSW if those severe storms intensify this afternoon.' As NSW and Queensland brace for another wave of storms, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and Canberra are also expecting to be hit with severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Coastal regions of NSW, including Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle, and Brisbane, are less likely to experience severe storms but moderate rain and thunder is still anticipated. The thunderstorm risk is high for eastern parts of Victoria tomorrow. 'The risk will extend into eastern parts of Victoria, including the Yarra and Dandenong Ranges and parts of east Melbourne,' Bradbury said. The chance of rain across the east coast remains elevated as the cold front advances from the south-east. 'A widespread 20 to 40mm is possible, with storm-driven rainfall totals likely to be significantly higher through that far south-eastern part of the continent,' Bradbury added. Heavy rain and storms are forecast for south-east NSW. Further rainfall is predicted on the NSW coast on Saturday and Sunday if the low-pressure system is intensified by strong southerly winds.Thunderstorms, flash flooding, and lightning wreaked havoc on the region overnight. The Central Highlands in Queensland endured winds reaching 94km/h, while heavy rain and storms battered parts of NSW and the ACT
