Often asked by schoolkids how she landed her job, marine biologist Amelia Keynes has one key piece of advice.
$80,000-$90,000 My day starts on the classic turquoise waters of the Whitsundays with a short ferry ride from Airlie Beach out to Daydream, along with about 50 or so other staff. I call myself an honorary marine biologist, as I actually studied zoology. But my degree covered marine systems and Marine Studies, and all of my work has been marine, right through from my first volunteering roles on sharks and rays, to now.
But one of my favourite jobs in the aquarium is called siphoning. Every day someone has to jump into our 800,000-litre tank, dive holding their breath, and use what is essentially a big underwater vacuum to suck out algae or detritus. It’s quite meditative and feels very satisfying.Although Daydream is only open to in-house guests currently, we do host local school groups. The kids often ask me how to get a job like this.
