Sometimes a player does all he can to make the team but there is no place to put him.
This is what happened to Davis Webb this summer, as he was among the Giants cuts on Tuesday as the team continued the process of trimming the roster to get down to the 53-player limit.
This is not the first time Webb was let go by the Giants. He was a 2017 third-round draft pick and spent his rookie year on the practice squad. He did not make the team in 2018, cut in favor of Kyle Lauletta, a draft pick of the new front office regime. “This was the best preseason I’ve had,” Webb said after completing 30 passes in the preseason finale against the Jets. “I think that was a credit to the offensive line, the coaches, [offensive coordinator Mike] Kafka did a great job calling plays. It was a lot of fun this preseason. Hopefully it works out.”
Webb, 27, has made no secret of his desire to go into coaching but he wanted to extinguish his opportunities as a player before moving on. Perhaps Webb returns to the roster once all the maneuvering shakes out the next two days. The Giants are expected to be active on the waiver wire once players from around the league become available. Perhaps he is claimed by another team. More likely, he returns to the Giants on the practice squad.
