That is how the offseason began.
It’s the first time the Giants have surrendered multiple draft picks since 2005, when they didn’t have a selection until the fourth round after signing Armando Benítez, Mike Matheny and Omar Vizquel the previous winter. Unlike those three players who signed multiyear contracts with no opt-outs, Snell and Chapman could be gone after one season. The last time the Giants gave up two draft picks for free-agent signings, Johnny Cueto was one of the big names they acquired.
