The country’s richest resident has made her displeasure privately known about a portrait at the national institution.
Already a subscriber?Being Australia’s richest resident comes with some perks. Who knew said benefits included a network of flunkies who will bombard a national institution over a painting you don’t like?have been sending correspondence to the National Gallery of Australia recently with feedback about a portrait she dislikes, painted by prize-winning Indigenous artistMichael Quelch; Rohan Thomson
There’s some history here. Namatjira was raised in Rinehart’s home state, and the Archibald-winning artist has painted the mining billionaire before. He’s also painted himself in his distorted, ghoulish style. Plus, my goodness, get a grip. Rinehart seems to want everything that comes with money and power, and influence, but without the other bits. She talks endlessly about being a proud Australian, but can’t bring herself to having a laugh, or taking the piss, both central to the said national myth.
That’s unless the NGA loses its spine. No doubt Rinehart’s campaign will have been directed to the NGA’s chairman,. Both are sandgroper mining billionaires breaking out of their fathers’ shadows. “C’mon Ryan, don’t let these woke artists bring down a great Australian!”sent us a statement that the gallery “welcomes the public having a dialogue on our collection and displays”.
