Guilty finding pertains to encounter with stabbing victim’s mother; second teen charged with stabbing 16-year-old victim
A 15-year-old girl found guilty of assaulting the mother of a teenage stabbing victim in Lakeside earlier this year — an incident prosecutors said was a hate crime — was sentenced Wednesday to an in-custody program for 120 days.
She asked for the girl to be released to attend to an intensive therapy program, arguing the conduct was “the result of the complexities of her history.”Sentencing in Juvenile Court is generally geared toward rehabilitation, not punishment.during a confrontation by a group of neighbors in April. The girl and her boyfriend, also a teen, were charged in connection with the attack and threats. The boy alsoAfter a three-day bench trial last month, theof assaulting the stabbing victim’s mother when she menaced the woman with the grate, a piece of hard, thick plastic used in landscaping to keep debris from flowing into drain pipes. Witnesses said she wielded the long and skinny grate like a baseball bat. The woman was not struck.
During the girl’s trial last month, witnesses indicated there were prior animosities between the youths, and those tensions boiled over during the confrontation at the apartment complex on Mapleview Street.
