The team with the transgender player lost its second round game and finished the year 12-6.
“We withdrew from the tournament because we believe playing against an opponent with a biological male jeopardizes the fairness of the game and the safety of our players,” Mid Vermont head of school Vicky Fogg said according to the network. “Allowing biological males to participate in women’s sports sets such a bad precedent for the future of women’s sports in general.”
According to its MaxPreps page, Long Trail, which went 12-6, was a fifth-seed in the tournament while Mid Vermont was seeded 12th. Long Trail advanced to the second round with the forfeit win, and promptly lost to Arlington Memorial, 45-26. CNN said that the state’s governing body for high school athletics — the Vermont Principals’ Association — has a policy on gender identity that says students may participate in athletics “in a manner consistent with their gender identity.” The network said the association said it “reiterates its support for each student,” following Mid Vermont’s withdrawal from tournament.
