A different dead character cameo makes more sense.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Plenty of discussion has occurred regarding a cameo from beyond the grave for Russell Crowe as Maximus in Gladiator 2, but given what is known about the sequel's plot and characters there is a better choice for a dead character's appearance.

However, that could be a fatal mistake for the much-hyped sequel. Including Russell Crowe as Maximus runs the risk of creating a distraction from the main story and its primary characters, which could undermine the movie right from the beginning. Given that Gladiator 2 focuses on Lucius, there is actually a dead character cameo that makes much more sense narratively than Maximus, and this one could enhance the overall story.

Commodus Would Make More Sense As A Gladiator 2 Cameo Than Maximus Joaquin Phoenix's Emperor Commodus makes the most sense for a dead character cameo in a movie that continues the story of Lucius given how significant a role the unhinged tyrant had on his life as a boy. Since the original Gladiator was released in 2000, Phoenix has risen from relative newcomer to Hollywood A-Lister, so it would be genuinely exciting to have a star of his caliber return for a cameo.

How Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus Could Actually Appear In Gladiator 2 The original Gladiator didn't delve into anything fantastic or supernatural, so it seems unlikely that the sequel would ever actually bring a character back from the dead. Commodus seemed definitively killed in the arena by Maximus, so some sort of scenario where it's shown that Commodus actually somehow survived being stabbed through the neck would feel cheap, and it is equally unlikely.

The original did lean on visions of the afterlife on multiple occasions, particularly when Maximus was near death, and that feels like the most likely scenario in which a dead character could make a cameo. Commodus could appear as some sort of evil representation in Lucius's mind. A flashback to an interaction between Lucius and Commodus not shown in the original Gladiator would also make sense, although it would likely require a bit of exposition to set up.
