Glasgow's Low Emission Zone is having a 'negative impact' on hospitality and leisure according to several businesses who say their customers are actively avoiding the city centre.

Several Glasgow businesses have said that the city's Low Emission Zone is having a "devastating impact" on hospitality and leisure.

“We are finding that many of our customers and colleagues are having to park outside the zone and either walk in or get a taxi here. The fresh opposition to the scheme comes in the week that a Freedom of Information request revealed that the Glasgow City Council regime had also spent almost £100,000 hiring 131 vehicles to cover fleet vehicles that do not meet LEZ standards.

“The communication from council with our industry has been non-existent; it’s incredible that council aren’t doing anything to look after businesses.” “On a logistics side, we now have to pay for taxis for our DJs because their vans aren’t allowed in the zone and they don’t want to walk through town with their kit.

Leon Thompson, executive director of UKHospitality Scotland, added: “In the absence of suitable late-night alternatives, many bar and nightclub workers need to drive to and from work, incurring fines. “Plans to phase in a LEZ were announced in 2018 and since then, there has been an extensive programme of communications and engagement to raise awareness of the scheme, its timescale for introduction and the availability of funding to ease compliance.
