Michael Phillips has taken his very first play, Not Our Crime, Still Our Sentence, to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year, inspired by his own childhood growing up while his dad served a 16-year prison sentence.
A Glasgow man has written a play inspired by his own childhood growing up while his dad was in prison.
"So, our 'normality' was getting to visit all the different prisons from HMP Maghaberry to Low Moss, to Shotts, Barlinnie - which was funny because I used to go to Smithy Croft Secondary, so I'd be waving to my Da at lunch from the pitch."Michael explained that the lack of support for his family put a strain on them, and made him want to create something which would highlight the experience of families whose loved ones were imprisoned.
"I wanted to make something which gives families of prisoners a platform where their voices can be heard, because for a lot of the time, it feels like you are screaming into a void when you're asking for help or trying to speak about what you are going through.
"I'm a big believer in change through conversation, there's nothing that doesn't get talked about over a cup of tea and a Tunnocks - it's a fair game when the tea cake is oot. He said: "I've always been a creative person. As a kid I liked to perform, loved drama & singing, and was a wee bit of a pain.
While Not Our Crime, Still Our Sentence tackles heavy issues, it features plenty of comedy, which was vital to Michael and a major part of his upbringing. Michael's dad is now a truck driver and living a "normal, simple life" and said the experience has helped make them stronger.
