Glass Onion tears apart the myth of the genius billionaire 💬 via ipaperviews
The satirical film centres around ‘disruptor friends” and Daniel Craig, as detective Blanc, taking part in a fictional murder mystery game at the lavish home of eccentric billionaire tech mogul Miles Bron, played by Edward Norton is causing a stir. Part of that stems from its star-studded castchic costume design and array of cameos. But it’s the central premise of the mystery itself that has also got people talking: it suggests billionaires are actually idiots.
The sort of person who uses malapropisms like “inbrethiate”, has an upside-down Mark Rothko painting on display, installed a dock to his island that doesn’t float, and flirts with newfangled yet potentially dangerous ideas; underneath his pseudo-intellectualism and wild extravagance, Miles is very mediocre. He is a Glass Onion, something that seems complex and layered but actually, the core is easily seen for what it is.
As our fatigue with the rich grows, Glass Onion is a perfect metaphor for the myth of the genius billionaire. Chiefly, it serves as a helpful reminder of the dangers of the rise of the cult of personality surrounding billionaires. The association of wealth with brains has long been a tool used by the wealthiest, from new money elites like Henry Ford and James Rockerfeller, to Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. Whilst the eccentric genius billionaire might seem like a cartoonish stereotype, the impact of their decisions can be detrimental to everyone else.
