The country's pre-eminent gay icon, Kylie Minogue made an appearance at Taylor Square before a 'surprise' performance at the Mardi Gras official after party

Kings and queens are common as muck at Mardi Gras, but among royalty there is none higher than Kylie.Anticipation of the pop princess infused the streets as revellers kicked off the 41st Sydney Mardi Gras parade, with the First Nations float striding on to Oxford Street just after 7.30pm and following the traditional Dykes on Bikes out of the gates.

But even if the politics was not as raw, it was certainly not absent, with many attendees adamant the parade’s origins as a protest movement had to be maintained.Annie Wylie, 27, marched with the Sydney Stingers, an LGBTQI-inclusive water polo team – the first time women have marched as members of the team."It has changed the whole club – suddenly it’s like this big community," she said.

Another newbie in Saturday’s parade was an 80-strong flotilla featuring the cast and crew of Neighbours, which last year became the first Australian television show to feature a same-sex wedding.
