The report underscores the critical issue of domestic violence, with Africa reporting the highest number of victims. Every 10 minutes, a woman or girl dies at the hands of an intimate partner or close relative. That's six every hour; more than 140 every day, everywhere. A new report from UN Women and UNODC revealed that 51,000 women and girls were intentionally killed by an intimate partner or family member in the past year. Alexis, a victim of domestic abuse, shared her harrowing escape from her ex-partner's control, highlighting the extreme danger faced during separation.

The report found that two-thirds of the 85,000 femicides in 2023 were committed by partners or relatives, with Africa reporting the highest number of victims, followed by Asia, the Americas, and Europe. Safe and Equal CEO Tania Farha emphasized that the reported figures likely underrepresent the true extent of the issue, especially concerning invisible victims and missing First Nations women
