Hot spells in Europe, North America, the Middle East, eastern Asia, parts of South America and most of Africa contributed to the high global average. "Even in a fairly normal year these days, because of the warming of the planet, we usually still see months that are maybe third or fourth warmest on record," Dr King said.

"El Niño peaked at the beginning of the year and the sea surface temperatures in the eastern tropical pacific are now going back towards neutral conditions.
