'They don't do it for Parklife:' GMP stops sending letters banning people from Carnival after campaigners' complaints
Campaigners have welcomed a decision by Greater Manchester Police not to send letters banning local people from Manchester Caribbean Carnival this year.
Greater Manchester Police have since confirmed that banning letters were not considered to be a 'necessary or proportionate part of our policing plan this year' for the carnival. "As with every major event, when we plan our policing operation we look at the security measures that are in place at the venue and undertake a thorough assessment of any intelligence and the potential harm that may arise from the identified risks of violence, antisocial behaviour, and criminal activity. Our assessment concluded that banning letters were not a necessary or proportionate part of our policing plan this year.
"We are working with neighbouring forces including colleagues from West Yorkshire Police Precision Programme, dedicated to tackling serious and organised crime in the county, and officers will be acting on intelligence to search and intercept anyone in the area suspected to have criminal intentions."
"Evidence from groups and organisations such as Amnesty International UK have continued to show that the police, including GMP, label black boys ‘gang members’ with weak or non-existent evidence, conflate ‘gangs’ and youth violence, and build racist ‘gangs’ databases, all with an end goal of securing unjust prosecutions."
