We chat with GodsTime writer and director Daniel Antebi about bringing lead character Regina to life, writing a three-dimensional woman with addiction, and finding a fresh face in Liz Caribel:
There have been plenty of movies about friendships, love triangles, and addiction — but few have blended all three themes together quite like God's Time. The Topic Studios production was written and directed by Danie Antebi, who has already been making a name for himself with this fresh and fascinating feature film debut. In God's Time, two best friends team up to stop the girl they both love from committing the horrible mistake of killing her ex-boyfriend.
Daniel Antebi: It was not the intended as my first movie. I was basically planning to make another movie for years, and we had been several scripts deep. We had built the whole team; financiers were accumulating; we had producers and were working with Sundance Labs; blah, blah, blah. And then COVID hit, and God's Time was a bit of a fever dream, in terms of writing and producing.
I loved the opening sequence of Regina at the AA meeting, sharing her story in a way that feels semi-fourth wall breaking. And then Dev comes in and immediately turns to the audience with, "This is what's happening." How did that come about, and how important was that in setting the tone for everything that follows?
Daniel Antebi: Yeah, I think that the movie plays with this a lot of this idea of the damsel in distress. She even looks at the boys at some point and says, "I am not here for your saving." And it was really important to me; she always had to be a person. She actually bears a lot of weight in the story, in terms of having to personify addiction. The boys are addicted to her, but it's in a fairly goofy sense., while she had to really hold the weight of what it means to be addicted.
