Kerleys co-owner Richard Howells can tell many yarns about his 40 years working at the Moorabool Street mecca in Geelong for seekers of second-hand goods
The former nightclub owner was down on his luck and needed some cash. So he put his false teeth up for sale at Kerleys Auction Rooms in Geelong.
Blink and you'll buy something: Richard Howells takes rapid-fire bids while co-owner Steven Robinson moves stock. Then there was the time a policeman dropped off a marble tombstone, engraved with a name and dates. That too was sold to the highest bidder. But all good stories must end and the gavel will bang for the last time at the 110-year-old business' final auction on March 3.Mr Howells said the rise of online trading had helped render Kerleys no longer viable. The practice of buy now, pay later for furniture and white goods was another nail in the coffin.
A happy mayhem: Co-owners Richard Howells, left, and Steven Robinson take a break during Kerleys Auction Rooms' second-last auction.Sometimes, Mr Ogilvie finds himself bidding for stuff he hadn't planned to buy.
