Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate wants to put the $380 million that Victorian taxpayers must pay in compensation for cancelling the 2026 Commonwealth Games towards hosting the event in his city.

EY partner Dean Yates said the Victorian Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions had ultimate responsibility for the business case document and his firm had “collated” figures, including estimates provided by other firms. He also flagged that the estimates had been limited by the secret bid process.

“Prior to the cancellation of Victoria 2026, Australia had an enviable international reputation of being able to host great Games,” Commonwealth Games Australia chief executive Craig Phillips said. Pakula fronted the inquiry on Monday as a “private citizen” after he retired from politics in 2022, but said he would not talk about high-level government discussions, confidential cabinet matters or topics that might conflict with the state’s compensation agreement with Games bodies.

Pakula said it was conceivable the regional multi-city model might have been too ambitious when it was put to him.
