Amelia’s Jewel and Legarto will leave it late to arrive in the harbour City for the $10 million showdown, with their trainers electing to keep them in familiar surroundings as long as possible.
Golden Eagle favourites Amelia’s Jewel and Legarto will have their final hitouts on familiar turf before launching fly-in, fly-out assaults on the $10 million Rosehill mega-race this weekend.
“She has overcome whatever was wrong going into the Toorak and all her work indicates she is back to best heading towards the Golden Eagle.”Amelia’s Jewel has moved back to the top of Golden Eagle betting as the $4.50 favourite despite her poor showing as favourite in the Toorak earlier this month, where she finished ninth behind Attrition – which will be a rival again on Saturday.
“Michael was straight on the phone to me after won the Matamata Cup telling me he will come to Sydney to ride her,” Legarto’s trainer Kelso said. “He won the Australian Guineas on her earlier in the year and to have a top-class rider like him give up Derby day is a fantastic boost.” Amelia’s Jewel won the Northerly Stakes in Perth last year before being runner-up in the Quokka. Legarto has a similra standing in New Zealand after winning seven of her nine starts, and is part of a golden generation of Kiwi gallopers including Sharp N Smart and Prowess, which won the Crystal Mile on Saturday.
