How will the West shape up after the NBA Draft?
SAN FRANCISCO — The Warriors’ big move on the day of the 2023 NBA Draft came hours before any picks, trading Jordan Poole to the Washington Wizards for veteran Chris Paul.
Golden State didn’t go too crazy in the draft, standing pat with their No. 19 pick to select guard Brandin Podziemski out of Santa Clara. They also sent cash considerations for the Wizards’ 57th overall pick to select versatile big Trayce Jackson-Davis from Indiana. It’s expected that Donte DiVincenzo will opt out of his contract with the Warriors, and Podziemski could fill that void. But how will the rest of the West shake out after the draft? Here’s a breakdown.The Mavericks traded their No. 10 first-round pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder for their No. 12 pick and forward Davis Bertans.
That opens up space for the Mavericks to add a significant contract without a sign-and-trade … such as Draymond Green. Green has been a rumored target for the Mavericks, who need a decision-maker and defensive anchor next to Luka Dončić. The Warriors appear confident that they will be able to bring Green back on a deal, who is expected to opt out of the final year of his current contract. But anything can happen.
With those picks, the Nuggets took Gonzaga wing Julian Strawther at 29, Penn State guard Jalen Pickett at 32 and Clemson forward Hunter Tyson at 37. If any of that trio can contribute the way rookie Christian Braun did for the Nuggets during their playoff run this season, it could bolster their chances at defending their title.Are the Spurs and Blazers contenders again?
