Moore Park Golf Course could be saved from being slashed in half by drawing inspiration from a famous links course in Scotland.

NSW Premier Chris Minns announced on Sunday that he plans to alter the Moore Park Golf Course's lease when it expires in 2026 and turn nine holes into a new greenspace for the growing population in the centre of the city.

“There's all sorts of examples that exist around the world. If you go to the actual Home of Golf in Scotland, a place called St Andrews, that is a wonderful golf course that people in the area access at different times,” Mr de Bohun told SkyNews.com.au. The concept is being explored by Golf Australia as an alternative to serve both Premier Minns’ plans for a green space and the booming Sydney golfing industry.

“There’s so many new people coming into golf. It's just brilliant. here's a whole lot of people coming in through avenues like golf simulators, technology based driving ranges, even mini golf and the issue for us is that as they start to learn the game and then public access, golf becomes even more important and that's why the Moore Park conversation is so important to us,” he said.

Public transport options around Moore Park, including the light rail, several bus stops and the nearby Central Station, adds to the venue's appeal. “As we work to tackle the housing crisis facing NSW by building up, we know that delivering public infrastructure including parks is more important than ever before,” he said.

“Marrickville Golf Club is the custodian of one of the most affordable and accessible 18 hole golf courses in Australia,” Mr Albanese said as opposition leader in a statement in September 2020.
