Repeated uncovering of Aboriginal remains and stone artefacts in sand dunes at Rose Bay's Royal Sydney Golf Club have prompted archaeologists to warn its proposed $17 million redevelopment may lead to more discoveries.
Before colonisation, Rose Bay was known as Pannerong. "The landscape was not just a larder. It was rich in meaning for Aboriginal people," writes Coast's director, Dr Paul Irish, a historian and archaeologist inA photo taken by the famous photographer Sam Hood of the Royal Sydney Golf Club in the days when the dunes surrounding the course were still visible. There is a chance, say archaeologists, that the dunes may contain Aboriginal remains and artefacts.
Some believe Bungaree, the first known Aboriginal person to circumnavigate Australia, is buried on the site of the golf course.Dr Irish said the area under development contained similar dune ridges to those near and under the clubhouse which contain "highly significant" Aboriginal remains and stone artefacts.
In 2009, when other renovations to the clubhouse were proposed, the remains of a man dating back to 690 AD and 900 AD were found. About 5734 stone artefacts were also uncovered nearby.A 2016 proposal to renovate the back of the clubhouse also appeared to discover more culturally sensitive remains. If additional remains exist, they are most likely within the top metre or so of sand within former dune ridges on the Championship site, said Coast.
