Five months after leaving the transport hub’s board, David Gonski is back – but he will be playing a different, more onerous role under its private ownership.
David Gonski’s decision to rejoin Sydney Airport’s board as independent chairman is part of a broader move by former ASX-listed companies to ensure there is a voice for other stakeholders under private ownership.
“Paul Keating said many years ago that superannuation funds will be the democratisation of capital,” he says.“He was right, because many more Australians have got direct and indirect interests into corporations. Sydney Airport has continued to publish annual reports that are lodged with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, but theGonski says the single biggest advantage of a private company compared with a public one is the ability of the board and management to think long-term.He says his experience on the boards of Singapore Telecommunications and Singapore Airlines gave him a new perspective on strategic thinking at board level.
Sydney Airport’s move to appoint Gonski follows the decision by the Blackstone-owned Crown Resorts to, John Borghetti chairman of Crown Sydney, and John Van Der Wielen chairman of Crown Perth.
