A new bill introduced by the teals calls for donation reforms that will help ensure government contracts are not awarded 'due to political donations and favours that are owed'.

Kate Chaney introduced the Restoring Trust Bill on Monday morning with 13 proposed changes to make the political donation process more “transparent”.

Ms Chaney told NewsDay that the reforms would help inform voters when they hit the polls, as she bid to lower the public disclosure threshold from $16,300 to $1,000. “Australians want to have faith in their politicians and there are a lot of things about the way our elections are run that undermines that,” she told Sky News Australia on Monday afternoon.

“Secondly, reducing financial influence. So people have faith that decisions are being made in everyone's interest… [and] levelling the playing field so that there can be competition for political ideas and candidates.”

Independent MP calls for electoral reforms in political donationsIndependent MP calls for electoral reforms in political donationsIndependent MP Kate Chaney is calling for electoral reforms in political donations saying the way elections are run right now “undermine” the faith of the people in politicians. “Australians really want to have faith in their politicians and there are a lot of things about the way our elections are run that undermine that faith,” she told Sky News Australia. “So this bill tries to do three things; firstly, improve transparency so we can actually see where the money’s coming from before we vote – secondly, reducing financial influence so people have faith that decisions are being made in everyone's interest, not in vested interests. “Thirdly, levelling the playing field so that there can be competition for political ideas and candidates just like we’ve got competition in business.”

‘Community pressure and support’ required for electoral reforms on political donations‘Community pressure and support’ required for electoral reforms on political donationsIndependent MP Kate Chaney says “community pressure and support” is needed to push for electoral reforms on political donations. “I think that communities really expect more, and I’m meeting with Don Farrell this afternoon and I will be talking to him about these 13 reforms that have broad support from the crossbench, but also from democracy think tanks and civil society organisations and academics,” she told Sky News Australia. “When there are things that are not necessarily in the interest of the major parties, the only way they happen is if there’s community pressure and support. “Helen Haines’ integrity commission private members bill is a great example of this; she introduced it and showed that it was possible. It took us a while but it became an issue at the next election and now we have an anti-corruption commission.”
