Google Is Likely Testing Its Own ChatGPT-Style AI

The tech giant is reportedly in a 'code red' effort to respond to OpenAI's text generator using its own proprietary LaMDA AI.

Google is reportedly already looking for ways to bring AI into search. The company is internally testing including Apprentice Bard on a version of their main page. In one trial version, a user inputs a query in the search bar, as they do now, but the top result is a human-like, written response displayed in a gray bubble directly below the bar. Then, beneath that, the results page suggests a set of AI-generated follow-up questions related to the first.

Gizmodo reached out to Google to confirm the details of the CNBC report and didn’t receive a direct response to our questions. Instead, company spokesperson Lily Lin sent the following statement: We have long been focused on developing and deploying AI to improve people’s lives. We believe that AI is foundational and transformative technology that is incredibly useful for individuals, businesses and communities, and as our AI Principles outline, we need to consider the broader societal impacts these innovations can have. We continue to test our AI technology internally to make sure it’s helpful and safe, and we look forward to sharing more experiences externally soon.
