"An incumbent can be 50% as good as something, but as long as they bundle it with a core pre-existing product with lots of customers they can still win," Elad Gil, the VC investor, wrote recently, citing the success of Microsoft Teams versus Slack.

During the keynote, Google implicitly highlighted another of its key advantages right now: infrastructure. The company announced that Character.ai, a startup that builds human-like chatbots, would partner to use Google's valuable TPU processors to grow its business. The reliance of generative AI startups on cloud computing will let big tech companies aggressively push for investments and multi-year deals in emerging businesses that would otherwise be considered competitors.

Did Google fall behind OpenAI? Maybe, but with billions of people interacting with the PaLM 2 model – and eventually Gemini – Google will be able to move quickly by collecting massive amounts of feedback from how people interact with this technology, and keep feeding it into its broad range of products. That's the data that will be used to train future iterations, creating a network effect that will push Google further ahead.
