The Democrats – including President Joe Biden, now deposed from his candidacy – have been fond of calling Donald Trump a threat to democracy.

'The real threat to democracy’: Google must be treated like a partisan media company after its shameful suppression of searches related to the Trump shooting

The much more realistic threat to democracy is concentrating the flow of information through a handful of big tech companies. It has told others, when asked about the very real assassination attempt, that it doesn’t “always have access to the most up-to-date information” but was happy to then provide information about Harris’ presidential campaign.Typing “assassination attempt” into Google prompted the suggestions of “Truman”, “Hitler”, “Castro”, “Lenin” and “Saudi” without any mention of Trump.

When Lord Acton wrote that"power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely" in an 1887 letter to historian-cum-bishop Mandell Creighton, he was referring to the latter’s ignorance of past corruption in the church. The threat to our way of life posed by the concentration of power in the hands of a few big tech companies was made clear and obvious by the censorship of Trump’s attempted assassination by Meta and Google, writes Caleb Bond.

And if that’s how big tech wants to play – essentially making editorial decisions about the content it does and does not show its users – then it should play by the same rules as media companies. And that comes with a suite of laws, including defamation, and codes of conduct to which media companies such as Sky News must adhere but Google and Meta have largely been exempt.
