Google Maps will display the renamed 'Gulf of America' for US users, while global users will see both names. The move follows a Trump executive order that also changed Denali back to Mt. McKinley. The changes have sparked criticism from various parties, including Alaskan officials, Mexican authorities, and social media users.
Google will be echoing name changes made in an executive order by President Donald Trump during his first day in office, which has renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America”. Google Maps will reflect the name change for users in the US, but those outside the nation will see both names displayed because when “official names vary between countries, Maps users see their official local name,” Google said.
“It is in the national interest to promote the extraordinary heritage of our Nation and ensure future generations of American citizens celebrate the legacy of our American heroes,” Trump’s executive order said. The executive order calls for all federal government maps and documents to “reflect its renaming”. Alaskan senator Lisa Murkowski strongly disagreed with the change to Denali’s “rightful name,” on social media.
