AFL: The 2024 Premiership window shapes as one of the most intriguing in recent memory, with none of the top four teams featuring.

Most recently, the Giants pursued a move for the gun small forward late in the 2021 trade period when the Hawks were open to moving their veterans. But it was several years before that when GWS first came calling that he seriously considered returning to his home state .

That’s some sliding doors moment, where the second part of Breust’s brilliant career could’ve played out vastly different. Jack Gunston and Breust pose for a photo at the 2024 Hawthorn Football Club Hall of Fame function “It’s pretty amazing and exciting to be back in another finals campaign and have the chance to go deep into September. Especially when you look at my journey and the decisions I’ve made the last six or seven years,” Breust said.

“We’d bottomed out and had to find some guys to play consistent AFL footy. There was a bit of an unknown there. So I always thought we could get back there, it was just a matter of whether I was going to run out of time.” It included Hawthorn trading the likes of Tom Mitchell and Jaeger O’Meara to aggressively rebuild its list and give more opportunities to young players, though some feared it cut too deep and would be set for a lengthy period of pain.

“We’ll see how this finals campaign goes. But I’m excited to be part of this group — it’s been building for a few years now and I still think I can play a really good role for this side – whether that’s on or off field. So while the Hawks were seemingly moving in a younger direction including bringing in young small forwards Jack Ginnivan and Nick Watson, Breust had every intention of playing a bigger role than he has for Sam Mitchell’s side in 2024.“‘Mitch’ and had a really good conversation in the pre-season. He pretty much said: ‘You made the All-Australian squad last year, so keep playing good footy and prepare well’,” Breust said.

“There’s been times when I was sub and played three or four quarters, then pull up sore the next week. “I think the biggest turning point was being honest with each other and driving really strong standards around here. Someone like Dylan Moore really drove that and the conversations we had in our leadership group were pivotal in all that.
