Simu Liu reveals the hardest part about playing one of several Kens on the set of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, and it involves a lot of hair removal.
Barbie star Simu Liu opens up about the surprisingly challenging part of filming as Ken on Greta Gerwig's upcoming movie. Based on the iconic Mattel toy, Barbie stars Margot Robbie as the titular doll with Ryan Gosling also starring as Ken. Liu stars as an alternative version of Ken, with the actor currently best known for starring in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Ahead of the Barbie release date this summer, Liu talks about one of the most challenging parts of playing a Ken in a recent interview with Variety. According to Liu, while the set was fun and full of life, the body hair waxing that was required of him was a bit of an unpleasant experience. To do that, you gotta get rid of the hair. I mean, within reason! But, there was a lot of waxing where I have never waxed before. Aside from that, it was incredible. A wonderful, vibrant set, so much of it was practical. So much singing, and dancing and music.
Barbie's Other Kens Explained It was announced fairly early on in Barbie's production that Gosling would be playing Ken, the beloved companion doll to Barbie. Later promotional material and trailers revealed, however, that the movie will feature multiple Barbies and multiple Kens. While Robbie will be playing the main doll, Emma Mackey, Ritu Arya, Nicola Coughlan, Alexandra Shipp, Kate McKinnon, and Hari Nef, will also be playing Barbies.
Barbie's plot is expected to revolve around Robbie's character being expelled from Barbieland for being imperfect, leading her to head off to explore the real world. It's possible that, as the name suggests, Barbieland houses countless different versions of both Barbie and Ken, all of whom are designed to be perfect.
