Gov. Greg Abbott has announced a special election to fill the Texas House seat currently unoccupied after Bryan Slaton resigned and was expelled earlier this month.

Gov. Abbott calls special election to fill expelled former state representative’s seatPUBLISHED 12:17 PM CDT May 30, 2023AUSTIN, Texas —

The special election for House District 2 will be on Nov. 7. Candidates have until 5 p.m. on Sept. 6 file applications. Early voting will start on Oct. 23.Slaton, 45, from Royse City, was expelled on May 9, the day after he resigned, after an internal investigation showed he got a 19-year-old intern intoxicated and had sex with her.

A report said Slaton later showed the intern a threatening email but said everything would be fine if the incident was kept quiet. He also asked a fellow lawmaker to keep his behavior secret, the legislative committee that recommended his expulsion said. Slaton repeatedly pushed to ban drag shows for kids and has tweeted his support for laws prohibiting gender-affirming health care.

The misconduct investigation began after two 19-year-old legislative aides and a 21-year-old legislative intern filed complaints in April. The committee hired a former state judge to conduct the investigation, which confirmed the complaints.
