Texas Gov. Greg Abbott speaks after signing one of several Public Safety bills at the Texas Capitol in Austin, Texas, Tuesday, June 6, 2023.Frustrated with the Legislature’s inaction on property tax cuts and school vouchers, Gov. Greg Abbott is punishing lawmakers by vetoing dozens of unrelated bills and declaring most of them nonstarters until his two priority items pass.

In many of the vetoes, Abbott has the same warning to lawmakers, regardless of the topic of a specific bill. Among the vetoes on Sunday was one of a bill by Sen. Drew Springer, a North Texas Republican, which would have exempted small agricultural trailers from title and registration requirements. Another by Sen. Sarah Eckhardt, D-Austin, would have allowed college students to have their past academic records excluded from consideration for admission to a school as part of the “Fresh Start” program.
