Mr Gove condemned the 'from the river to the sea' chant, which is considered anti-Semitic by many

Protesters attend a march, demanding a cease-fire in Gaza, as it heads over Vauxhall Bridge on March 9, 2024 in London, England. has told pro-Palestine supporters to question whether extremists are behind some of the most recent demonstrations across the country, as he condemned the “from the river to the sea” chant. While protests have been largely peaceful, Mr Gove said “Good-hearted people” needed to be aware they could be “lending credence” to proscribed groups by attending them.

Mr Gove also condemned the “from the river to the sea” chant, which is considered antisemitic by some but has been heard at some pro-Palestine marches across the country. Some argue that the chant is calling for a Palestinian state stretching between the River Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea and, therefore, the eradication of Israel. Others believe it calls for equality for all within the historic Palestinian state.

The long-serving cabinet minister, whose portfolio includes communities, was speaking ahead of the publication of a revised official Government definition of extremism. Despite his claims, Mr Gove said it does not mean that those who attend the marches are extremist, but “quite the opposite”.
