Scott Morrison announces crackdown on violent social media content. 9News

"Building it and making it safe means you can't let a terrorist atrocity be filmed and up and posted and streamed online for 69 minutes. That is not acceptable."

Inside the meeting, Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton questioned the executives over why the video remained online for so long. "There's nothing within your algorithms or network that advises you there is a 17 minute video livestream of people being murdered on your platform?" he asked. The executives were unable to say how long it took for the video to be removed after it was reported by members of the public. The government says its new taskforce will report to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, through the departments of the Attorney-General, Home Affairs and Communications.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said he would support a crackdown on social media platforms, but doubted the government would take legislative action before the election.
