The Albanese government is being urged to make progress on Indigenous truth-telling with people left 'hurting' following the voice referendum defeat.
The Greens will seek to establish an Indigenous truth and justice commission as a prominent elder criticises the government's "silence" following the voice referendum failure. Legislation will be introduced this week to establish the commission, which would be empowered to examine historic and ongoing injustices against First Nations people and make recommendations to parliament.
Uluru Dialogues chair Pat Anderson said the referendum outcome should not stop the government from enacting the Uluru Statement from the Heart. "It has been nine months since the referendum and there needs to be forward momentum," she said in a statement reported by the ABC. "Our people are hurting from the silence, and there needs to be leadership.
