Highly-anticipated rain and storms are forecast across NSW and Victoria from Wednesday, but they bring risks of their own.

Rain and storms are likely to bring significant relief to bushfire-affected areas over the weekend, while the NSW government is looking to ensure that the state's drinking water is protected from ash and debris.

Showers and storms are expected from Wednesday due to a deepening inland trough drawing humid air across eastern Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology said."Over the last week we've seen a real shift in the weather pattern," said meteorologist Sarah Scully. "From the hot and dry conditions that we, unfortunately, became all too familiar with over the last few months, to much more humid conditions."She said the much-anticipated showers and storms are forecast to develop across eastern Australia, with the potential for heavy rainfall in some places including fire sites.

While it's difficult to predict where the most rain will fall, the bureau said the storms are likely to be slow-moving and accumulate 30 to 80 millimetres of widespread rainfall over the next few days. The Rural Fire Service is hopeful for heavy rain in the areas that need it most, with spokeswoman Angela Burford saying scattered rain would only hinder firefighting efforts.
