Ongoing police patrols at shopping centres and tougher penalties for people caught carrying knives are among the suggestions being put forward by politicians following the Sydney stabbing attacks.
Six people were killed by Joel Cauchi at Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre last Saturday, and a 16-year-old boy has been charged with committing a terrorist act after allegedly stabbing Assyrian Orthodox Bishop Mar Mari EmmanuelLaws around knife crime are different in each state but federal government minister Bill Shorten called for "nationally consistent laws" and "tougher penalties".
"I am going to make sure we get evidence, look at the circumstances of those two events and ensure changes that we potentially make would make a difference." The commissioner referred to a recent operation that focused on knife crime, where 51 knives were seized.. At the moment, the law allows police to use hand-held metal detectors to search people in all safe night precincts, at public transport stations and on public transport without a warrant.Opposition Leader Peter Dutton said all states should look at what Queensland has introduced.
The Victorian government passed laws earlier this year that made it illegal for a person under 18 to carry a machete. The parents of teenager Jack Beasley who died after being stabbed in Queensland in 2019 are pushing to bring 'wanding' laws to NSW. "The Westfield shopping centres of Australia, you know, we all go there, they're like the high street of old," he told Channel Nine.
