Treasurer Jim Chalmers is waiting to conclude conversations with relevant ministers before pulling the 'trigger' on responses to sure up gas and energy supplies in Australia.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers is not prepared to pull the"trigger" yet and commit to price controls and curbs on gas exports to reserve supply amid fears of an energy crisis.
“We do have a very dangerous spike in gas prices at the same time, as we’ve got substantial increases in electricity prices and petrol prices as well. Mr Chalmers said he was in discussions with Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen and Minister for Resources and Minister for Northern Australia Madeleine King.
The Australian Energy Market Operator , which runs the power grid and gas prices, warned over 100 suppliers on Wednesday they may have to limit gas use if the strain increased,AEMO has also implemented the Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism, which reserves the amount of gas sold domestically, for the first time since it was introduced in 2017.
Despite calls for action to immediately sure up energy and gas supplies to homes and businesses Mr Chalmers said the government needed to resist the temptation to implement a short-term solution.
