The government will advocate that the wages of Australia's lowest-paid workers do not go backwards, as the Fair Work Commission reviews minimum and award wage rates.

The federal government has called for the minimum wage to keep pace with inflation to ensure real wages do not go backwardsThe Fair Work Commission will determine increases to minimum and award wages to begin from July

"While we've made welcome progress on inflation and seen a return to real wages growth earlier than forecast, many Australians are still under pressure – particularly low-paid workers," Mr Chalmers said. "Despite increases in nominal wages, and the return of annual real wages growth, the real value of award wages has been eroded in recent years given the global inflationary environment," the submission reads.

Workplace Relations Minister Tony Burke said the wage review had been an essential part of its efforts to drive wage growth. The Coalition has previously criticised the government for being seen to put a thumb on the scale of the Fair Work Commission's independent decision making.
