The federal government has finally stepped in to address the lengthy delays in passport applications, as some would-be travellers are forced to camp out in the cold while they wait. 7NEWS
are also facing long delays in renewing their passports to return home.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said it had been slammed with “unprecedented high demand” for passports, with more than 1.2 million issued since June 30 last year - almost double the 2020-21 financial year. “This is resulting in longer-than-usual call centre wait times, as well as an increased number of customers queuing at our passport offices,” they said.
