Parents are NOT happy

The Education Secretary has set out plans for all schools to bring in a 32.5 hour week, which he says will help pupils catch up.

He said that a child who receives 20 minutes less teaching per day will lose out on two weeks of lessons per year and that ‘thousands of pupils’ were getting between 10 and 30 minutes less teaching time a day. ‘I'd like them all to do it by the end of this year, but I know some of them have logistical problems which is why we said that by next year they should achieve that.

And teaching unions are warning that any changes to the school day could, in fact, have a negative impact on pupils learning.'We are unconvinced by the benefits of introducing a minimum expectation on the length of the school week of 32.5 hours.''Adding time on to the school week may sound straightforward, but there are many issues which need to be considered in individual schools, and we would encourage the government not to rush any changes.
