The government is concerned about a 72-year-old Australian man currently detained in Vietnam, with Foreign Minister Marise Payne confirming the government are seeking to have him returned to Australia.

Chau Van Kham has been imprisoned in Vietnam since 2019 due to his involvement with a pro-democracy group, Viet Tan.

“Our concern in relation to Mr Chau Van Kham … our concern though is his age, he is in his 70s, he is unwell,” Ms Payne said. “We have sought an appropriate consideration of his circumstances given those facts and to have him allowed to return to Australia and we will continue to press that case.”
