Australian playwright Grace Chapple brings E.M. Forster's classic novel to life, focusing on the heroine's journey of self-discovery and the social critique embedded in the romance.
Grace Chapple, an emerging Australian playwright based in London, has adapted E.M. Forster's 1908 novel 'A Room with a View' for the stage. The adaptation, premiering at Sydney's Belvoir St Theatre before moving to Melbourne Theatre Company, centers on the coming-of-age story of Lucy Honeychurch against the backdrop of turn-of-the-century English society.
Chapple's inspiration for the project was sparked during a solo trip to Florence, where she listened to the audiobook and felt a profound connection to the protagonist's character development. The play not only explores romantic entanglements but also delves into broader themes of independence, truth, and the consequences of breaking from societal norms. This adaptation follows the success of Chapple's debut play 'Never Closer', which examined the impact of the Troubles on a group of Northern Irish friends.
