Under the changes, bachelors graduates in these fields will be granted the right to four years work, up from two years, masters graduates will get five years, and PhD graduates will be granted six years. Our research, including 50 interviews with employers, international graduates, and migration agents, as well as the survey mentioned above, shows that many employers lack understanding about the 485 visa and the work entitlements attached to it.
While extending the duration of the 485 visa might provide employers in hospitality, for example, a much-needed boost in the supply of labour, the fact that we fail to efficiently harness and maximise the skills of these graduates remains.. At the same time, they continue to languish in migration limbo as the likelihood in securing permanent residency is diminished.
In areas of skills shortage, there needs to be faster and more transparent pathways to permanent residency for these graduates.

Optus’ response to massive data breach ‘incredibly weak’Sky News host Chris Smith says the massive Optus data leak which compromised the privacy of up to 9.8 million users raises the issue of if customers “can ever trust the security of our utility providers again”. “What was Optus up to, in delaying news of the breach to the public, and then to their customers?” he said. “The government's Scamwatch site says: ‘If you are an Optus customer, your name, date of birth, phone number, email addresses may have been released'. “’For some customers, identity document numbers, such as driver's licences, or passport numbers, could be in the hands of criminals’.” Mr Smith said this leak could make it easy for criminals to commit identity theft but questioned why, if the breach was discovered on Wednesday night, Optus did not make a statement until 2pm Thursday afternoon. “That's an incredibly weak response,” he said. “That delay has clearly allowed hackers, to begin the process of harvesting key data, without customers able to offset those attacks themselves. “And what is also astounding about the way Optus is handling this, is that still today, they don't know exactly how many customers are impacted.”
