Menacing graffiti targeting Northern Irish actor James Nesbitt is being treated by police as a hate crime.
says he is ‘sadened’ and ‘unnerved’ as police confirm they are treating as a hate crime the appearance of menacing graffiti targeting him.was daubed on a wall in the predominantly unionist town of Portrush in Co Antrim, which read: ‘1x king, 1x crown, no Pope in our town James Nesbitt.’
‘It’s a bit unnerving of course … it really saddens me because I am just sorry this has been brought to Portrush, brought to my neighbours, brought to a community I love,’ he said. Nesbitt said the graffiti ‘suggests an element of sectarianism,’ adding he wants to see sectarianism ‘eradicated.’ ‘Jimmy Nesbitt is a local lad who has invested in his own community,’ Campbell said. ‘Those painting threatening graffiti such as this should stop. Their actions are wrong and to be condemned.
‘These threats are an attack on the right to freedom of expression. They come only weeks after James Nesbitt addressed thousands of people in Dublin from right across the political spectrum to discuss the future of the island of Ireland.
