A man who died in flash-flooding south of Brisbane has been identified as local grandfather Peter Wells. It’s believed the 71-year-old drowned when his ute was swept away at a flooded river crossing off Begley Road early on Thursday. His ute was found “submerged” in a flooded creek on a private property in Greenbank, Ipswich about 5.20am after police were called to the property for a welfare check. The area had received about 150mm of rain in 24 hours. His body was found nearby.
Acting Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said it was early days in the inquiry but the incident was “clearly an absolutely tragic circumstance”. A report will be prepared for the coroner. Several other people in the region also drove into floodwaters overnight and needed rescuing, Gollschewski said. Three more drivers were saved from serious injury in Murwillumbah as a sudden and intense rainstorm swamped the NSW north coast.
